New York State Capitol Restoration - Research Guide

The Legislative Library contains several resources regarding the renovation, arrangement, and plans for the New York State Capitol. In 1971, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. In 1979, the New York State Capitol was designated a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service.

One major project that is ongoing is the renovation of the New York State Capitol. The Temporary State Commission on the Restoration of the Capitol was established by Chapter 50 of the Laws of 1979. It was created “to make a complete study and recommend a master plan for the long-term restoration and renovation of the state Capitol in Albany.” The commission produced several annual reports, an historic structure report, and created the Master Plan for the New York State Capitol. In 1988, the Temporary State Commission on the Restoration of the Capitol was extended and renamed the “Commission on the Restoration of the Capitol” by Chapter 303 of Laws of 1988. The commission is active and working. The commission was most recently extended by Chapter 55 of the Laws of 2023 until 2028. Other long-term renovation projects include renovating the Legislative Library.
